The Unreasonable Effectiveness of *
Wigner's 1960 essay on why mathematics fits the physical world at all — and the whole genre of successor titles it spawned.
The asterisk is deliberate. Wigner wrote The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences, and the title turned into a template — unreasonable effectiveness of data, of recurrent neural networks, of mathematics in biology, of scale. The template survived because the underlying puzzle keeps recurring in new substrates.
Wigner's version: the mathematical concepts physicists reach for were chosen for elegance, not for fit, and they fit anyway — to absurd precision, in domains they were never designed for. He declines to explain it. He calls it a "wonderful gift which we neither understand nor deserve."
What I take from the whole * family is a working heuristic: when a
representation keeps paying off far outside the regime it was fit on, that
over-generalization is the finding. It means the representation caught
structure, not surface.
